Color for Philosophers: Unweaving the Rainbow
C.L. Hardin
$11 - Used - PB
1988
Some minor bumping due to age. Clean, no markings. Lightly dog-eared.
Black + White and Color illustrations throughout. Plentiful chapters such as The Structure of Phenomenal Hues; Object Metamerism (a phenomenon where two objects with different reflection or transmission spectra appear to possess the same color under a specific light source); Adaptation, and Contrast; Ontology of Color. The author concludes that, since color doesn't fit anywhere in our science (as presently conceived), it therefore follows that color doesn't exist -- or is, at best, an illusion. This expanded edition of C. L. Hardin's ground-breaking work on color features a new chapter, Further Thoughts: 1993, in which the author revisits the dispute between color objectivists and subjectivists from the perspective of the ecology, genetics, and evolution of color vision, and brings to bear new data on individual variability in color perception.

Written in Invisible Ink: Selected Stories
Hervé Guibert
$14 - LIKE NEW - PB
Released in 2020 through Semiotext(e) & Native Agents.
Lightly handled. Fresh off the shelf. No markings.
Hervé Guibert published twenty-five books before dying of AIDS in 1991 at age 36. An originator of French "autofiction" of the 1990s, Guibert wrote with aggressive candor, detachment, and passion, mixing diary writing, memoir, and fiction. Best known for the series of books he wrote during the last years of his life, chronicling his coexistence with illness, he has been a powerful influence on many contemporary writers.
Written in Invisible Ink maps the writer's artistic development, from his earliest texts—fragmented stories of queer desire—to the unnervingly photorealistic descriptions in Vice and the autobiographical sojourns of Singular Adventures. Propaganda Death, his harsh, visceral debut, is included in its entirety. The volume concludes with a series of short, jewel-like stories composed at the end of his life. These anarchic and lyrical pieces are translated into English for the first time by Jeffrey Zuckerman.

ALL ABOUT H. HATTERR
G.V. DESANI
$8 - NEAR FINE CONDITION - PB
No markings or creases. Like new.
WHEN All About H. Hatterr was first published in 1948, it received almost universally favorable critical notices. It was immediately successful, and seemed likely to establish its author as a first-rank novelist. But because of the strange interactions of whimsical public tastes and the mechanics of the modern publishing world, it slipped into literary limbo, becoming another in the long list of "underground classics."
With its republication it has returned above ground. Whether it will remain there, like the works of Jorge Luis Borges and Malcolm Lowry, similarly once-lost-but-now-redeemed, is still to be seen.
